Across the Isles: South Bass Island
SOUTH BASS ISLAND
"Put-in-Bay is whatever you want to make it," says Put-in-Bay Mayor Mack McCann. "There's any kind of entertainment you want. There's live entertainment downtown if you're of the party set. But one block away, you've got everything else you could want—the caves, and The Butterfly House, putt-putt for the kids, go carts, Perry's Monument, the fish hatchery, and the Museum of Island Life, housing exhibits that chronicle 100 years of island life.
How to Experience South Bass Island
For a Party Mood
Not only does South Bass Island have the world's largest swim-up bar at the Grand Islander Hotel, Put-in-Bay also features a 130-year-old round bar at The Roundhouse, and the world's longest bar at the Beer Barrel Saloon. And there are many more entertainment venues in downtown Put-in-Bay's three-block area.
Where to stay: Stay overnight in a downtown hotel, such as the Caribbean-style Grand Islander Hotel or the Commodore Resort Hotel, where the majority of the rooms have views overlooking its self-proclaimed "famous pool area and tiki bar."
For Family Fun
Bring the bikes, or traverse the island on a rented golf cart to cover the most ground. Head to Perry's Cave, for a tour that takes you to a lake 52 feet underground. The property includes miniature golf, the Put-in-Bay Butterfly Museum, and a gemstone-mining sluice.
Where to stay: Rent a cottage for a mid-week stay if you're planning to stay over on South Bass Island Visit www.putinbay.com for a list of accommodations.
For Rest & Relaxation
Where to stay: Stay at a bed and breakfast on the island, some of which don't allow kids. On the eastern end of the island, try the Vineyard Bed & Breakfast, located on 20 acres "of rural island solitude" (www.vineyardohio.homestead.com).
